DRew Powell as Hoss Cartwright in The PonderosaMany years ago we watched the premiere of a prequel to the TV show Bonanza. I’d waited for this night for a few reasons – #1 The star was Daniel Hugh Kelly  (Need I say more?) - #2 I’d grown up with Bonanza as a television viewing staple and often wondered about the “early” years and hoped this show would answer some questions. – #3 I was curious to see how  they were going to make Australia look like Lake Tahoe?

Well, DHK was handsome as ever, and after a while I forgot that the scenery didn’t match the lake that I know and love. I never found my answers about the early days of the Cartwright family as the story line didn’t exactly follow the Bonanza canon. But, what I did find were two talented young actors who made me forget about the history of the Bonanza Cartwright family and become a fan of  The Ponderosa Cartwrights, Drew Powell and Matt Carmody.

Drew played a young Hoss Cartwright like no one else could. I later learned he’d had little exposure to the original Bonanza show and therefore little knowledge of Dan Blocker, the original Hoss. By his performance, you would have thought he’d studied Dan’s smirk, his stance, etc. dilligently. Drew played the iconic character his way and still brought out the charm of the Hoss we all loved for so many years.

I looked for Drew in other shows over the years, but there wasn’t much about him on the web in those early days. One day I discovered a Yahoo group in his name and some wonderful fans of The Ponderosa. Many had met Drew at the Bonanza Convention in Lake Tahoe in 2005. So, with their help, Bev and Sue especially, I created my second actor website. After a while Drew asked if we could make the site “official” and a new chapter began for both of us.

My husband and I first met Drew in 2007 while he was performing in a benefit for “Food On Foot”. The show was Bedtime Stories, a series of one act plays written by the talented Gloria Calderon Kellett. We’ve since shared many plays and film festivals with Drew. Our latest trip to LA  was in January of this year to see Drew in Paul Reubens’  stage production of “The Pee Wee Herman Show”. Even in a bear costume, Drew was a standout. =) The show was great!

You’ll be hearing a lot more about Drew in these pages, so keep checking in.  I also have a video page for Drew. Just click the link at the top of the page and have fun!

Nick Stabile as Dennis Wilson

I almost didn’t watch this TV movie. I’d seen “Summer Dreams” and thought this was going to be just as disappointing. I respect  Bruce Greenwood as an actor, but for me, he just wasn’t Dennis Wilson. Nick Stabile, however, had me drawn into the story before he uttered a word. He smiled. Then he giggled. Suddenly it was summer in February and I was once again a preteen girl, giggling right back.

It wasn’t just the handsome young actor on the small screen that had me blushing. I was actually remembering Dennis. I attribute this to the amazing talent of the actor portraying him. Nick had the walk, the talk, the laugh, the way Dennis held his head, so many things that I remembered about the Beach Boys’ drummer. I was so caught up, I didn’t notice that Nick’s eyes are brown and Dennis’ were a standout blue.

The 48 hours waiting for part 2 was agonizing, but worth the wait. Playing Dennis in the years when his inner demons were surfacing couldn’t have been easy. Nick did it and he did it well. I was impressed. I started watching other TV shows and movies with Nick in the cast. His talent never let me down, whether he was struggling with a murderous Chucky doll or flirting with Alissa Milano.

Nick’s Official website wasn’t updating much due to the creator’s busy school schedule. I’d been playing with the free websites that Yahoo was handing out with every screen name back then. Pick a template, add a photo, a few lines of text and you’re a webmaster. So I used Nick as my first subject. One page turned into two. Two pages became 4. Nick had previously purchased his domain name and asked if I could make my website “official”. I was honored.

I remember watching him work while on the set of Santa Jr.  a few years ago with tears in my eyes. I was so proud of him. Not many aspiring actors have the drive or the passion or the talent to survive in Hollywood. Nick has all three. I’m still honored, 9 years later, to be his webmaster and his friend.

Got your scorecards ready? Here’s the initial family. These are my “web kids”, a very talented group of artists who were brave enough to let me play with their websites. (If you mouse over the thumbnails on the left, you can see everyone’s name and a snap of their website.)

Nick Stabile was my first actor website – my first website period. He starred as Dennis Wilson in the TV mini-series The Beach Boys, An American Family. Working on the show, he met Jon Stebbins, author of “Dennis Wilson, The Real Beach Boy”. Through Jon, I also met Stephen Kalinich, an amazing lyricist and poet who wrote  many songs with Dennis. Nick was in the same episode of Popular as Drew Powell. Drew co-starred with Matt Carmody in The Ponderosa. Veronica Powell is Drew’s wife. Ursula Taherian co-starred with Matt in Carver.

See, I told you Hollywood was a small town. I’ll be writing about many more of their friends in the future, too. Everyone  is connected in “less than six degrees”.

I decided that rather than just posting a page showing a bunch of thumbnails of the websites I’ve created, I’d use my homepage to tell you more about my friends, and their friends. I have met so many, not only talented but truly amazing, ”kids” over the years.

So, keep visiting and I’ll introduce you to them. =)

Thanks,
Carole (Webgranny)
